the morning after the night before
It always seems like a good idea at the time doesn't it? But we do it anyway, even when we know we shouldn't, even when we know we'll regret it the next morning. I'm not a big drinker by any stretch of the imagination (which is probably why my head is pounding quite so hard this morning) but when you're with friends, and the conversation, and wine, is flowing, it's not always quite so easy to keep track of how many glasses you've had. I often think it can be quite anti-social not to drink when everyone else is, not that anyone ever bullies me into it, at least they haven't since I was 16. So yes, I have a cracking hangover but I am going to blame being well mannered - as I was hosting and it would have been rude to leave my friend drinking wine alone. How very English of me to get drunk out of politeness. Not buying it? No, neither am I. I am old enough by now to know better, time to remember that next time a bottle is opened...

Would your friends have minded if you'd sipped away at one glass while they quaffed most of the wine? It certainly wouldn't have bothered the English people I know!
No, I'm sure they wouldn't have minded at all, but my resolve always seems to leave me after I've had one glass!
